Parents are Absent and Teachers and Learners Fear for Their Lives

Ask Why teachers may keep away from school while learners are faking sicknesses to stay home. I will respond that South African learners, teachers and likely parents have many reasons to fear and maybe get tempted to keep away from schools and learning institutions. Why … ? A person unfamiliar with the news and sad news coming out of our schools may ask.

It looks like both parents and teachers have failed to instill morality in children as both discipline and the need for continues discipline has plummeted. More and more children cannot be told to do or not do. Teachers worry about lack of values and continue to question the commitment of parents who send rowdy children to schools and expect the teachers to put them in order.

Is the South African Society Failing Schools?.

Children continue to slay each other with pangas on school grounds and act back with knives and guns at teachers. The silence amongst adults seem to insinuate that communities are beginning to get used to these attempted and real killings. Where are core values of society? As an Involved Parenting Conversationalist, I feel like engaging in debates, but extending actions on discipline as South Africa contemplates the future and the roles that schools and parents should play in teaching and grooming children. What are the responsibilities of children towards each other, parents and teachers? Some parents say that teachers are terrorists, but a majority of teachers have been experiencing terror from children who dare them. It is unfortunate that the increased disrespect could be from the fact that some of these learners are much older than their peers and are very close to teachers in age as well.

In my work, I have found many teachers who have left the profession and many more are considering leaving because they fear their pupils and even parents. I have found very few parents who are remorseful of what children do. I have met children who are not aware that their actions are wrong.

Parents need to talk education with their children after school, not talk Safety and Security. Stand up and be there. Families are cautioned that everyone does not have to be religious to be able to determine right from wrong. We just need to be empathetic and also teach children empathy.
